The Apache, IVCCs student newspaper, has won one national award and 20 state awards in recent competitons.
Cartoonist Gerry Dowell won a Certificate of Merit from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association in the Gold Circle Awards Competition for an editorial cartoon about the biology lab vents. She competed against newspapers at universities and community colleges nationwide.
In the state contest, the Apache was named First Place in Merit, Third Place in overall Excellence and staff members won 18 individual awards.
Competing in the tri-weekly/monthly publication category at the Illinois Community College Journalism Association Conference, the staff won more awards than in any previous year.
First Place awards were won by:
- Nate Bloomquist and Jo Zulkowsky in news for "Bomb scare evacuates college,"
- April Biswell in photo for "Hey guys, wait up,"
- Bloomquist in photo for "Looks like this is laundry day,"
- Ted McLendon in arts for "Cheeseball radio"
- Holli L. Rapp in sports features for "Strong views about Apache nickname expressed," and "Bice spices up Lady Apaches,"
- The editorial staff for computer graphics for "IVCC students spring semester" and "final exam schedule."
Second place awards were won by:
- Staci J. Sessler in news for "$23 million construction plan proposed," and in photo spreads for "Geology students rock and roll" and "Soberfest a reality check,"
- McLendon in arts for "Two essential additions"
- Bloomquist in sports news for "Lady Apaches among nation's elite,"
- Gerry Dowell in freehand cartooning for "Wouldn't it be cheaper to move the parking lots,"
- The editorial staff for layout.
Third place awards were won by:
- John Baracani in sports news for "Apaches 4 - 1 in conference, share lead,"
- Randa Anthony and Amy Vohs in features for "Jagasia: from India to IVCC"
- Anthony and Bloomquist in editorials for "New books create new headaches."
Editorial staff members Anthony, Bloomquist, Baracani, Biswell and David Msseemmaa attended the ICCJA Conference April 9 - 10 at College of DuPage.
