Megan Sluis, 19, of Princeton, is one of five returning softball players this season.

She and veterans Shelly Obermiller, Beth Grooms, Tina Wujek and Nicole Thompson form what coach Bill Forrest calls "a good solid foundation to work off of."

Sluis, a sophomore studying public relations, likes all sports, but softball is her favorite. She has been playing since the age of 5, introduced by her two sisters who play and her father who coached.

"Megan is an enthusiastic player along with being very aggressive," said her current coach. "She is a good leader on and off the field and she has a lot of confidence."

She will be playing first base this year, but also could catch.

"She is a player that could fill many positions," Forrest said. "Sluis has a good arm and can catch really well. Her batting could improve a little, but that is easy to work on."

Sluis, who batted .300 for the Lady Apaches last year, said,"My season goals are to improve my batting, field the ball well, but most of all just have fun."

She played three seasons of varsity softball at Princeton High School before coming to IVCC, and she plans to continue playing the sport she loves at Monmouth College when she transfers there next year.

In addition to softball, Sluis is the vice president of the Student Government Association, and aa member of Student Ambassadors and Sigma Delta Kappa.
