Letter to the Editor: Athletics pays off, says softball coach
Dear Editor,
The strong part of this years softball team is all 11 of the girls. They made a promise and commitment and are still working to make their season successful and fun.
I can think of at least 12 girls that started to fund raise for our trip to Disney Spring Training and signed papers saying they were going to Florida and then dropped out. It makes me appreciate the present team that I have. It also reinforces what many, many employers have told me: "We have good luck with student athletes."
Of course Ive seen an example of what being committed to sports did for my oldest daughter. She is now 23 years old. She graduated from IVCC and went on to ISU majoring in accounting.
One day she was trying to get an internship and was going through the gym at ISU with 1500 other students and 50 different companies. The rep from Cat in Peoria looked at her resume and said, "Cheryl, did you play all three sports at IVCC?"
She said she had and he told her that they have very good luck with student athletes. She received $6500 over the next 16 weeks as an intern for Caterpillar Inc. and at the same time took six hours of class work.
The only real difference was that she had the student-athlete on her resume rather than just the hours of work for several different employers that everyone has. Maybe thats why she passed her CPA exam too, because she has commitment and knows what work is all about.
The cream will always rise to the top.
