Phillips speaks on waste

How clean should hazardous waste sites be?

Geology instructor Mike Phillips tackled that question in an Honors Colloquium Program on Jan. 27.

Phillips identified the most common type of contamination as leakage from underground gasoline storage tanks, and he asked, "How much can we allow to leak back at a site and not pose a health risk to people?"

He explained that not every hazardous waste site poses the same risk, and that risk assessment is a long and involved process, sometimes taking several months.

After hearing the presentation, student Karen Pierson said it was interesting "if you care at all about the environment."

Pierson said she found the slides Phillips used "interesting but sad."

Tiffany Kelly also said she enjoyed the presentation: "It was explained in terms that could be easily understood."
