Connection with IVCC:
Had been on the IVCC Board of Trustees from 1971 to 1991. Chairman of the Board for several years.
Qualifications for the Board:
A tremendous interest and love of the educational process and a willingness to make a contribution of time and energy to advance it. I had served on the IVCC Board of Trustees for 20 years, much of that time as chairman. Served on the Illinois Community College Board advisory finance committee for two years helping to develop policies applicable to funding for all Illinois community colleges. Served on two national panels evaluating governance in higher education, one sponsored by the Ford Foundation and the other by the Carnegie Foundation.
Why running for the Board:
After being asked many times to consider becoming involved with IVCC once again, I decided that now was the time to respond to the concerns of the taxpayers and students.
Biggest challenges facing the college:
The greatest challenges which will confront the district in the next few years will be the solidification of the faculty, maintenance of the physical plant and improvement of the financial policies of the district.
Other comments:
To expand on my last statement -- your recent increase in tuition places you and your fellow students well above the published mean tuition for Illinois community colleges. The fees are a separate issue in themselves.
You and your families will be further impacted by the next tax bill which will contain an increase in the IVCC levy of 39.47%. (Source: News Tribune, Dec. 5, 1998, page 3)
Your vote may be the first step in a long difficult struggle to help change the financial course on which IVCC has embarked. Think about it.
