Candidate for Secretary
The following information and comments are the candidate's responses to an Apache questionnaire
Major: Communications-Business
Age: 19
H.S.: Ottawa
Residence: Ottawa
Experience in IVCC activities:
Just started writing articles for the Apache.
Experience in student government:
Currently the Freshman Programming Board member.
Why running for SGA:
I initially ran for SGA because I was very involved in student organizations at Ottawa. My involvement was a big part of my life and I felt I needed to jump into things at IVCC also. I am running again because I had a positive experience and I believe SGA is a very important organization.
Why that office:
I am running for secretary because I think it is the position that best suits me and I will enjoy the most. I want to have a more active role and will bring my organization, attendance, and neatness to every meeting in order to have accurate notes about the discussions for our records.
Qualifications:
My most important qualification is that I was a member this year. I have the knowledge of what is expected and what goes on. I think this will be important because most of the members now are sophomores and will not be returning.
Issues/Problems that SGA should address:
SGA should address any issues or problems that could affect the students or that students bring to our attention.
Suggestions of getting students more involved on campus:
I understand that students attending IVCC have other things going on besides school such as work, family, and friends. IV is not the center of their life, so students want to just attend class and leave. It is different than attending school far away where it is the major part because familiarity is taken away. I think IV is doing a great job advertising activities and events. Students need to take the initiative and get involved if they choose. They need to realize that the activities brought here are geared toward their interests and could be entertainment. Plus the lack of participation in athletics could be a great opportunity for one who thought they couldnt play before.
Should the college offer tuition waivers to athletes and/or student leaders of campus activities?
I think that if tuition waivers to athletes and/or leaders of campus organization/activities are implemented they will be well thought out and fair so why not give back something to those students who dedicate their time and talent to the college? I think it is appropriate and a good idea!
Other comments:
Student Government is involved in major issues with the college. It represents the student body and gives it a voice. It is important that everyone realizes this and votes during elections.
