TRANSFER TALK: Representatives from the following universities will be on campus to talk with prospective transfer students:

* April 20 -- Eureka from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

* April 29 -- Eureka from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

* May 3 -- Lewis University from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

All representatives will be in the main lobby.

 

APOLOGIES TO GREENE: The story about math instructor Russ Greene’s retirement in the March 15, 1999, Apache included errors.

Before coming to IVCC, Greene taught at Belvidere High School near Rockford, his Masters degree is from the University of South Carolina, and Greene’s daughter, who is in flight attendant school, has three daughters.

 

 

CHEMISTS WIN, AGAIN: The IVCC Chem Club received an award of Outstanding at the American Chemical Society national meeting at Anaheim, Calif. in March. Of the more than 600 college groups competing, only 22 were named Outstanding, and IVCC was the only community college to win.

The local group presented a poster of the projects they sponsor and was one of only 30 college groups to present demonstrations at the convention.

Members who attended were Beth Whittington, Rhiannon Petzel, Melanie Gleason, Patrick Hansen, Julie Gula, Ryan Smith, Jamie Townsend, Adam Croissant, Kelly Caldwell and advisor Robert Byrne.

The campus club is routinely recognized as Outstanding at the national meeting.

 

 

CHEM ACTIVITIES: The IVCC Chem Club is making plans for Earth Day on April 22, river testing on April 24 and a bus trip to a baseball game on May 24.

For Earth Day, the American Chemical Society members will sponsor a scavenger hunt for which prizes will be awarded and posters will be on display in the link. At 10 a.m. the group will plant a bur oak tree on campus in honor of Lou Borio, retired chair of the life science division.

For the river testing, interested volunteers will meet in the circle drive at 8:45 a.m. Secretary Julie Gula said participants may go canoeing afterwards at a cost of between $15 to $20.

Sign-ups for the baseball game are being accepted through May 5. Gula said the cost of $10 would include transportation, the ticket to the game and a sandwich from Subway.

 

SIFE TEAM COMPETES: Members of the Students in Free Enterprise Team were competing in the 1999 SIFE Regional Exposition and Career Opportunity Fair April 6 and 7. At press time, competition results had not been released.

The team presented their educational outreach projects to be judged by a panel of local and national business leaders and entrepreneurs who rate the projects and the presentations. Winners of the regional competition go on to finals in Kansas City.

Team members include Tera Aukland, Tara Brickert, Chad Calsyn, Nick Dzierzynski, Jamie Lemmer, Lorraine Napier, Amy Robinson, Jodie Schumacher, Connie Uzella, Amber Vanwaes, Brenda Vissering and Dave Burton. They are advised by Alice Steljes, Bob Reese and Mike Sankovich.

 

HIGH SCHOOL ARTISTS: An exhibit of artworks created by students enrolled in high schools in the district will be in the Cultural Centre Link May 3 through 14. A reception will be held May 4 from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. in the Link.

 

SPEAKING ON ART, AFRICA, NEWS: Upcoming presentations in the Honors Colloquium Program include discussions on art, Africa, and the news media.

Art instructor N. Dana Collins will discuss "Recent Work: Drawing and Collage" on April 14. Simon Cordery of Monmouth College will discuss "Of Many Africas" on April 28, and Charles N. Wheeler III of the University of Illinois at Springfield will discuss "The Role of the News Media in a Democratic Society" on May 5.

All of the presentations are in F-113 from 2 until 3:50 p.m. and are free and open to the public.

 

PUT YOUR NAME IN PRINT: The Apache is accepting applications for positions on the 1999-2000 staff. All students, part-time and full-time are eligible. Applicants do not need to be enrolled in a journalism or communications course.

CAPS AND GOWNS: Measurements for caps and gowns are still being taken at the Bookstore.

Bookstore manager Lauren Sandberg said order would be placed soon to guarantee delivery for graduation. "Please don’t wait until the last minute to be measured," she said.

Cost of the cap and gown is included in the graduation fee, Sandberg said.

TEACHERS WRITING: High school and community college English instructors will be on campus April 13 for a writing workshop presented by Houghton-Mifflin Company and sponsored by IVCC and the Starved Rock Association for Vocational-Technical Education.

Linda Houston, Coordinator of Communication Skills and the Writing Center at Ohio State Agricultural Technical Institute in Wooster, Ohio, will present the workshop.

 

 

NEED HELP WITH A CLASS? Peer tutoring is available free of charge in the Academic Assistance Center in B-315. Applications are available in the tutoring office, B-325. Further information is available from Coordinator Vickey O-Neal-Woodward.

 

TAKE BACK THE NIGHT: A Take Back the Night March is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. April 20 at the City Park in Streator. Organizers said the purpose of the march is to focus attention on making streets safe from violence and sexual assault.

The march is sponsored by ADV & SAS, A Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Service, and by the Business and Professional Women of Streator. ADV & SAS has an office in C-212 through which they offer a number of services related to domestic violence and sexual assault.

April 8, 1999 the Apache
