Results of a survey to determine substance abuse by
students have recently been released.
For example, the statistics showed that 64.3 percent of
respondents reported underage use of alcohol in the past 30 days; 23.7 percent
had used marijuana in the past 30 days and 12.2 percent had used illegal drugs
besides marijuana.
The survey was conduced in spring 2006, and 623 students took
part. The Students Task force Advocating Recreational Safety meets weekly to
follow up on the survey.
A May 2 meeting discussed next steps. STARS plans to hold
another survey sometime in 2008 and raise awareness about alternatives to
drinking and smoking. “I think social marketing will help along with offering
alternatives” for things to do on the nights and weekends, said Vera Adams.
