Another year has gone by and IVCC’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. essay contest has once again proven to be a success.
Already in its fourth year, the essay contest has again awarded three IVCC students for their excellence in writing surrounding the civil rights movement.
This year’s winners are John Gawron, an IVCC student and baseball player from Florida, for his essay entitled “A Reaction to Speeches of Martin Luther King Jr.,”
Sam Latzzis, an IVCC student and an inmate at Sheridan Correctional Center, for his poem “Not A Mystery Anymore” and Shawn Murphy for his science fiction story.
According to the Diversity chairperson, IVCC government professor Amanda Bigelow, the judges claimed that “this year was the hardest to judge.”
Fifteen entries were submitted and a selection of faculty and staff members served on the committee. Winners read their works at a reception held on Feb. 21.
Besides running the contest, the Diversity team and POWER also donate a book on civil rights to the library each year in the name of the contest winner.
