Illinois Valley Community College’s golf time had to brave the cold weather at the Western Illinois University invitational on April 5th - 7th which caused many on the team to have poor showings.
Sophomore golfer Adam Winans shot well despite the weather, garnering a best score of the day on the seventh with 72. Winans finished by going three under par for the tournament but was kept out of the top five.
Coach Mike Riley said the conditions were “ridiculous,” and the team was given the option to play or go home. “The ground was as hard as rock and the wind was whipping up to 30 miles per hour. No one wanted to play, but no one wanted to quit either.” Riley went on, “They hung in there and did what they could.”
“Thats the nature of this sport. Our players have to understand that there will be all sorts of conditions that they will have to be in. The ones that will do well, will prepare and practice in all types of weather.” Riley said. “The guys that carry all the extras; the stocking caps, the rain slicker, the under armor and the towels. The players that are prepared to play and have enough awareness will succeed no matter what the conditions on the green.”
