Nominations accepted for Faculty Excellence Award
By Brittany Muller
IV Leader Staff, Feb 15, 2007
In grammar school, the hallways are flooded with posters
claiming that teachers are givers, helpers, and leaders. As kids, we may have
sneered at this, not fully understanding the meaning. But, now in college, we
begin to realize that teachers really are a link to helping us succeed.
For everything teachers have done for us and for every time
teachers have challenged us, IVCC is giving students the opportunity to thank a
teacher for their outstanding performance as a leader and contributor through
the 2007 Faculty Excellence Award.
This award is a way to recognize an instructor or counselor
who has been outstanding in areas such as leadership, teaching, professional
development, and contribution to the community and IVCC. Before considering a
nominee, there are a few guidelines to follow. To be eligible, a nominee must be
employed full time at IVCC for at least three years.
Also, if the individual has won the award before, he or she
will not be eligible for nomination for three years. The last three recipients
include Diane Christianson (2004), Larry Ault (2005), and Koshu Jagasia (2006).
The selection process has already begun. Nomination forms
have been made available through
www.ivcc.edu/awards/.
One can obtain a form in the Human Resources Office in C-319
or in the cafeteria. To submit the form, one can do it electronically through
the IVCC website, bring it to the Human Resources Office, or send it
electronically to
humanresources@ivcc.edu.
All forms must be submitted no later than Tuesday, February
20, 2007. The nomination form entails choosing one or two areas in which the
nominee excels. Some of these areas involve contributions to the college,
effectiveness in the classroom or counseling environment, and efforts toward
self-development.
The form also asks the nominator to write a short paragraph
explaining the qualifications of the nominee. Specific examples are suggested to
help evaluate the nominee in totality. Once all of the nomination forms have
been turned in, the awardees of the three previous years will form a
subcommittee and review the nominees to make sure they are qualified.
This subcommittee will choose no more than ten nominees and
submit them to Human Resources. Nominees will then be asked to complete a short
biography, describing their involvement with IVCC and the community.
Human Resources will then distribute a ballot to all
full-time faculty members and counselors who will have an opportunity to rank
the candidates.
Once a winner is chosen, he or she will attend the annual
International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence, which is help
each May in Austin, Texas. The winner will be recognized by IVCC at the annual
Recognition event and at commencement. The recipient of the 2007 Faculty
Excellence Award will also be awarded $500.
Besides this being an excellent chance to reward an
outstanding leader, guider, and teacher, it is a chance for the students to
reflect on their experience at IVCC as a whole; it is a chance to ask what one
has learned and what one has gained through the efforts of the faculty at IVCC.
It is important to note that all nomination forms must be submitted by February
20, 2007.
