IVCC student Shante Clingman won tickets to an upcoming
Chicago White Sox game just for working out.
Clingman was the winner of the IVCC to U.S. Cellular Field
Challenge, which was run by the IVCC Fitness Center from February 27 to April
21. It was the third year of the competition and the first year the competition
went to U.S. Cellular Field.
Clingman was one of approximately 20 people who completed the
105-mile competition, which is the approximate distance from IVCC to U.S.
Cellular Field, which took place in the Fitness Center.
Her name was randomly drawn of the contestants who completed
the competition. Vice President of Student Services Dr. Robert Marshall, an avid
White Sox fan, randomly drew the winner on April 26.
“There are multiple factors for the competition,” Fitness
Center Director Tony Ruda said. “One, it encourages students to be more in
aerobic health by running/walking on the treadmill and biking on the exercise
bike. Two, students are more likely to come to the workout. They’re energetic
and they have a goal in mind that there shooting for. Of the 45 students that
entered, it was great motivation for them (to come in) and they actually had a
lot of fun.”
As part of the competition, each participant had to bike 60
miles and run/walk 45 miles. All 105 miles were documented by a Fitness Center
worker.
“We had what I would call a good turnout for our contest,”
Ruda said. “It was about average.”
Ruda said that some of the participants were able to complete
the course in three days.
Ruda said the annual competition is expected to be held again
next year.
