Mendoza takes top spot in MLK writing contest
IV Leader Staff
Freddron Mendoza was awarded first place in the Martin Luther King Jr.
writing contest hosted by the IVCC Diversity Team.
Mendoza wrote and submitted the winning essay while he was serving time in
Sheridan prison. He was enrolled in classes through IVCC’s extension program.
Also submitting winning pieces in the contest were Peter Hamilton with a poem
entitled, “For the People;” Brittany Muller with a short story called “Winter
Extinction,” and Katie Nett, with a poem entitled “My Song.”
Winning entries were presented to an audience on March 1 in the Fireplace
Lounge.
Mendoza received parole the same week and was able to attend and read his
first-place piece.
Contest coordinator and political science instructor Amanda Bigelow said,
“IVCC’s diversity team is thrilled that a diverse group of students represent
the top finishers this year.
“Along with traditional students and Freddron Mendoza, Katie Nett is a current
high school senior attending Hall High School participating in IVCC’s Early
Entry college program.”
The top three entrants in the competition received cash prizes.
