The Illinois Valley Community College men’s basketball team
dealt visiting College of Lake County their fourth loss of the year, breaking
their 12-game winning streak, in a highly contested 107-98 match on Feb. 11th.
The Eagles’ record stands at 10-13 with five games left in
the season, three of which are conference games.
Coach Mike Riley said, “We have been playing really well for
the last few games and if you just look at our record, it doesn’t show how good
we really are. We can compete against any team but sometimes we haven’t gotten
the ball to bounce our way. Five of our games were lost by four points or less.”
He went on to say, “Our game plan was to be aggressive and
attack the basket and I think we did that well. We were able to take a lead and
hold on to it throughout most of the game. We have been working on finishing
games strong as well as the other things, like rebounding and free throws.”
Sophomore guard Maurice Montgomery led the team with 36
points on 75 percent shooting from the floor and 81 percent from the free throw
line. He also came up with seven rebounds and three blocked shots.
In the last three games, Montgomery has averaged 29.3 points,
6.3 rebounds, 1.6 blocked shots and 1.6 steals.
The strong play of freshmen Durrell Kern, Billy Ghighi and
Quentin Noblin kept the Lancers from making a comeback run in the second half.
The Lancers were held to 33 percent shooting inside the arc
in the second half but were hot from three-point range, finishing with a 42
percent average.
Kern added 20 points (and put on a show with a pair of dunks)
shooting 61 percent from the floor, while adding two rebounds, two steals and
two blocked shots.
Noblin had 21 points in the game shooting 61 percent from the
floor. He also added four rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Ghighi led the team with 12 rebounds, added seven points,
four assists and a steal.
