Petitions available for SGA positions
Sophomore petitions for Student Government
Association positions will be available soon in the Student Services Office,
C-202.
Available positions include president, vice president,
secretary, treasurer, sophomore representative and student trustee to the IVCC
board of trustees. In addition, two sophomore programming board slots are open.
The petitions can be picked up March 13-17 from Sandy Beard
in Student Services. Completed petitions must be returned March 17 for a
student’s name to appear on the ballot, according to adviser Cory Tomasson.
The sophomore elections will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. March
23 and 24 in the front lobby.
Current student trustee Matt Simko said every student should
be interested in student government because “SGA often speaks for the student
body and serves as the decision-making body for all of the student organization
budgets.”
He said the basic commitment is to attend bi-weekly meetings
and other functions, “but its important to note that while everyone's thoughts
are welcome to SGA, those serving among its elected membership should have a
solid commitment to the school and its students. They need to be able to
consider a variety of matters in a thorough and open-minded fashion and should
be creative in not only addressing problems but also in developing new programs
and events on campus.”
Benefits of serving include developing leadership skills,
making friends, being involved in the inner workings of the school and, in some
cases, earning a tuition waiver, Simko said.
Freshman Representative Megan Guilfoyle also noted that
involvement looks great later for college and job applications.
