Do you want to make a difference? Are you registered to vote?
If not, are you going to?
Mike Phillips, geology instructor at IVCC, along with other
faculty and staff members are giving the students the opportunity to register to
vote right here at IVCC.
To register, one must be 18 years of age and be a citizen of
the United States.
When registering to vote, students need two forms of ID,
including one with your current address. Students can bring a driver’s license,
piece of mail, checks, or class schedule. He/she just needs two proofs of name
and address.
“To vote in the March 21 primary, you must register prior to
Feb. 21, but there will be late registration at the County Clerks offices from
Feb 22nd through March 7,” said Phillips.
There will be a registration table in the front lobby
Wednesday, Feb. 15; Thursday, Feb. 16; and Tuesday, Feb. 21.
Students can also go to Jacobs Library and ask to get registered to vote.
This past spring, 171 students registered to vote and this
past fall, 319 students registered to vote.
Phillips said, “This year we will elect a governor and all the other state-wide
offices, state representatives, some state senators and U.S. representatives.
“The state office holders determine education funding among
other things and this is a great opportunity for students to voice their
concerns,” said Phillips.
It doesn’t take very long for people to register to vote.
Once you register, you receive a slip of paper indicating that you are
registered to vote, which is your temporary piece of identification to indicate
that you are registered.
As a U.S. citizen, it is your right to vote, so students can
take advantage by signing up here at IVCC.
Janell Griswold, IVCC Freshman, said that she has already
registered to vote, but that she believes that this is a great opportunity for
IVCC students to register to vote. Also, she believes that this service is very
beneficial and that everyone should take advantage of this opportunity.
If students are unable to register at IVCC during the
registration period, they also can register through their county clerk’s office.
