Baseball, men's tennis and softball seasons last year wrapped up as the spring semester was ending.

BASEBALL

The men’s baseball team ended the spring 2001 season with an overall record of 45-24, and a sectional and Region IV championship.

Among the highlights for individual players: Pitchers Billy Terry and Nathan Miller both won six games each, and shortstop Brad Butler had a batting average of 360.

Coach Bob Koopmann said his team has won close to 50 games every season for the past three years and his goal is for the team to win at least 50 games this year.

Practice for this year’s season will start the last weekend in February with some practice games before the season actually starts.

MEN'S TENNIS

The men’s tennis team emerged from the National Tournament in Tyler, Texas, last May ranked 23rd in the nation.

Competing with both Division 1 and Division 2 schools, the IVCC netters won four matches in the national tourney, compared to just one win the year before.

The men, coached by Eric Perez, were 9-3 for the season. They took the Regional Championship with a 6-0 record and were undefeated while playing at home.

Chris Ford, the #1 singles player, placed #58 in the nation.

Ryan Myers and Rob Washo were named co-MVP’s for the team.

SOFTBALL

The 2001 softball team finished with an overall record of 31 wins and 9 losses, placing them fourth in the region. They finished second in the conference with an 11-5 record.

"From what I have been told, it’s the best record the softball teams here have ever had." said coach Cory Tomasson.

The Public Information Office confirmed that it was the women's best season ever.

Pitcher Gabe Wood led the nation in ERAs, strikeouts and strikeouts per inning. She had 260 strikeouts and a record 22-5 in pitching. With a batting average over .450, she led the team RBI's and homeruns.

She was named to the Arrowhead All Conference Team, to the All Regional Team and won an all tournament team award for the Highland Community College Tournament.

Catcher Marie Gubbels, who "caught for the first time in her life," according to coach Tomasson, was Second Team All Region. Casey Novotney was named All Conference.

Wood and Gubbels are expected to return for the 2002 season.

Tomasson said over half of the team earned recognition for academic excellence from the conference last year, "which is probably one of the accomplishments that is most important to us as a coaching staff."

The first game for the 2002 season is March 19, after a spring training trip to Florida.
