INSTRUCTIONAL THEME: College promoting environmental responsibility
By Peter Forbes
Concern for the environment is being encouraged on campus this year through the adoption of an instructional theme.
Instructors have been asked to work the topic of environmental responsibility into their courses.
Geology instructor Mike Phillips, who originated the instructional theme idea last year, is encouraging faculty to integrate environmental problems into assignments and course work.
"Last year instructors mentioned environmental issues and did things in class that were not formal," Phillips said. "Participation (in the theme project) is growing, and I hope we turn it into something we look forward to."
Dr. Harriet Custer, vice president of academic affairs, said a theme helps students to see the relevance of their coursework and illustrates the relationships among different courses.
Last years instructional theme was the general elections.
