Parking improperly will dent your wallet.
Rumors that parking regulations would be strictly enforced this fall proved to be true after the Labor Day holiday. Director of Safety Services, Ken Sangston, said vehicles that violate the regulations listed in the IVCC Handbook are being towed promptly. In the first few days of the semester, officers were stationed in the faculty lots to discourage parking violations.
The addition of three new officers is allowing Safety Services to do a better job in monitoring the parking lots. Sangston said one officer will operate the switchboard in the late afternoon and the other two will patrol the lots.
"Before, one person did it all," Sangston said. "It is difficult for (a single officer) to cover 400 plus acres with buildings and 4,000 plus students."
Plans also call for the installation of security cameras to monitor the parking lots, Sangston said.
Student complaints about parking have focused on the location and distance of the lots, not on the enforcement of a towing policy.
Charmaine Wrights comment is typical "The parking lots should encompass the entire school, not just concentrate on one side," she said. "It is inconvenient when you are running late, and you have to walk a mile just to get from your car to the building."
OTHER SECURITY ISSUES
At press time, Sangston said no theft reports had been filed this semester, and the last accident on campus dates back to early May.
Sangston said that although most accidents have been very minor, the pavement in lots two and five has freshly painted markings, which could reduce future bumps or dents.
