The intramural football season is underway with students and faculty roaming the gridiron, or the front lawn of the campus, during the noon hour on various days.
This years flag football league consists of nearly 50 members on five teams.
"There is always a lot of competition throughout the league," participant Billy Terry explained. "Its supposed to be just for fun, but it gets pretty serious at times.
"The majority of the players are good athletes, and, of course, no one likes to lose, so your competitive drive turns into energy that you use on the field. It gets ugly sometimes."
Intramural director Bob Koopmann plans to organize numerous activities during the 2001-2002 year including basketball in winter and ping-pong leagues. Koopmann also looks to establish a coed volleyball league sometime in January.
"All of these programs have been successful in the past, and it was brought to my attention that intramural volleyball would be of interest, so we are going to try that out as well this year," Koopman said.
Any student or staff member is eligible to participate in the intramural program. Sign ups for the next sport, basketball, can be completed anytime before Oct. 28 by submitting a team roster to Koopman in G 207.
"(The intramural program) gives participants a chance to get away from classes, have fun, and compete at the same time," he said.
