The Mu Alpha Chapter of Sigma Kappa Delta, IVCCs honor society for English students, has been working on a number of projects recently.
On Spirit Day, Sept. 26, the group sponsored a dunk tank which featured counselor Renee Jones, English instructor Sharon Trotter-Martin, math instructor Wes Black, business instructor Bob Reese, athletic director Mike Riley, speech instructor Cory Tomasson, foreign language instructor Lou Caldwell, and English instructor and SKD advisor Brian Campbell.
On Oct. 3, the chapter had a cookout in the courtyard, serving hot dogs, hamburgers and soda.
On Oct. 5, new members will be initiated and new officers will be announced.
On Oct. 12, members will be attending a Maya Angelou program at St. Xavier University in Chicago.
Other upcoming events include a bake sale and a blood drive on dates to be announced.
Advisor Campbell said this year's activities have been going very well.
"I am excited with the level of student involvement," he said. "It is a great mix of students with plenty of wonderful ideas for activities."
The Mu Alpha chapter was established at IVC in the spring of 1998. A national honor society for English students at the community college level, SKD's purpose is to recognize and reward students with outstanding achievements in English, literature and creative writing.
To be eligible, a student must complete a minimum of one English class, have a minimum of a B average in English, and have a 2. 0 overall gpa in at least 12 credit hours.
