IVCCs AmeriCorps program, known as the domestic Peace Corps, is looking for additional member-volunteers. Two students are currently in the program with room for two more.
Jill Urban-Bollis, IVCCs coordinator, said the volunteers focus on community issues, education, and providing tutoring and mentoring to children. Volunteers Lee Dvorak of Ottawa and Opal Keegan of Streator underwent an intensive week-long training session at Rend Lake Community College in the summer to assist them with the tutoring project and other community service projects they will be initiating during the year.
"This is a tremendous experience," Urban-Bollis said. "There is no other way to get this type of experience with children. It is a great way to receive this type of opportunity."
Volunteers are also paid $4,500 for a year of service.
Recent projects for the IVCC volunteers have included:
- Working with Phi Theta Kappa on a Relief Drive to raise funds for the American Red Cross in its relief efforts for victims of the Sept. 11 disaster.
- Conducting a book drive for senior citizens in housing developments.
"We have two full boxes of books," Urban-Bollis said at press time. "We have a long way to go, but I am happy with what we have."
Future projects include planning for Make A Difference Day in October and Martin Luther King Day in January.
"The program is going outstanding and the members selected have done a great job," Urban-Bollis said.
