Strategies for College students organize drive
By Manuel García Sánchez
Business clothes and office supplies were collected by the students of Strategies for College (SFC) course as part of their final project.
IVCC students who might not have proper attire to go for jobs interviews can use the collected clothing.
This project, named the Capstone Project, was developed during the eight week course to help students get ready for success. The students made a formal presentation of the project on Oct. 9.
During the presentation students asked visitors if they would be interested in either borrowing or donating items for the project.
SFC students hope that the project continues to grow and help people.
Roy Camacho, one of the students who helped with the presentation said, "I was surprised by the reaction of everyone. The whole class was great and I hope we can give a good example to others."
According to instructor Koshu Jagasia, this has been phase one. Phase two would be to see what items have been collected and to contact the people who may need to use them or are interested in donating.
"The project can be adapted and adopted by an IVCC organization," she said.
Jagasia does not want to call it a charity or a sympathy action.
"I think we owe to each other to do this. You are not doing anybody a favor; you are doing ourselves a favor."
Her students agree that everybody came together for a good cause.
The idea for the class assignment was suggested after students asked Jagasia for a more practical and less theoretical class.
She replied, "I promise you I will provide you something that is related to work skills, something that is job oriented."
Jagasia proposed the idea of developing a project for and by the students. She used as an example her own experience of loaning extra copies of books to students who need them, and, at the end of the semester, the students return them.
"This is what I do to collect my positive karmas," she said. "Would you like to do something like that?"
