Course designed to develop leaders
Developing and improving leadership skills is the focus of a three-credit-hour course being offered in the spring semester.
Leadership Development, LDS 1000, will meet from Jan. 10 through March 6. Taught by English instructor Kirk Lockwood and psychology instructor Jill Urban-Bollis, the course was originally developed by Phi Theta Kappa, the international honors society for two-year colleges.
Lockwood said, "This class assumes that everyone has leadership potential, so its really designed to bring out the leadership qualities that we all have."
Bollis said, "We are both very eager to teach the course as it provides students with the opportunity to incorporate their own strengths and to recognize their own role as a leader."
The course will also address the moral and ethical responsibilities of leadership.
Lockwood said student leaders, in the SGA or other organizations, are obvious candidates for the class, but it is open to any IVCC student, full-time or part-time, transfer or non-transfer.
"If were able to lead, we can take a more active role in the world around us, to make a greater impact," Lockwood said, adding that the course would look impressive on a resume.
"This class has the potential to be a lively, engaging learning experience," Lockwood said.
A variety of teaching techniques will be used including discussion, experiential exercises and films.
The course will meet on Tuesdays and Thursday from 1 to 3:30 p.m.
