Who's got game and who doesn't is becoming clear with intramural basketball well underway. League leaders at press time were Jessie Cavanaugh, Tom Tunnell, Travis Naber, Jake Resser, Tim McGeorge and John Calkins.

Cavanaugh, who played high school ball at Ottawa, is a sophomore playing for Pony Express. Cavanaugh has the most impressive statistics in the league. He leads the league in points per game with 26.2, and he also leads in 3-pointers with 23 and in free throw percentage with 10 for 10.

Cavanaugh said, "The Teachers beat us early in the season, but we were short handed, and hopefully we will get another chance to play them. If we do, the result will definitely have a different outcome."

Tunnell, a mathematics instructor, played at IVCC when he was a student. He is number two in the league in scoring with an average of 25.2 points per game, playing for the Teachers team.

"So far the competition has been pretty tough," Tunnell said. "It's a little hard to keep up with the younger guys, but I have very good teammates who do a good job at getting me the ball with the best opportunity to score."

Naber played for L-P High School where he averages 13 points per game. As a sophomore, playing for the Green Team, he is dominating the competition. He is averaging 24 points per game and is third in the league in free throw percentage at 81 percent.

About his team's chances, Naber said, "I think we have as good a chance as anybody of making it into the championship; we just have to stick together and play as a team, and we should be just fine."

Resser is an Ottawa graduate where he averaged 16 points per game. A sophomore at IVCC, he plays for O-Town and is averaging 22 points, putting him fourth on the leader board. He is also in the top ten in free throw percentage at 72 percent.

Resser said: "All the teams are pretty equal so you have to watch out every week and make sure you don't just show up. Every week you have to come with your 'A' game. O-Town started out slowly but we are looking forward to the playoffs which we will coast through and win the championship."

Tim McGeorge, from Seneca, is also a sophomore. He is averaging 21 points per game for Tim's Titans which puts him fifth on the leader board.

McGeorge's prediction: "Pony Express is stalked but they will choke in the end. Now that I have all I can ask for in life in being a top five scorer for the league, I can't ask for anything else in life."

Calkins played high school ball at Marquette where he averaged 21 points per game. As a freshman at IVCC, playing for Tri-County, he is also averaging 21 per game. He is fourth in free throw percentage at 80 percent.

Calkins said: "The competition has been pretty intense so far. We have a solid team, and I think we have a good chance at winning it all. We have seven good players who can step in and give us quality minutes so we have very good depth."

TEAM STANDINGS

Tri-County, Pony Express and Teachers, were tied for first place with 5 - 1 records at press time. In fourth place was the Green Team at 4 - 2. Tim's Titans and O-Town were tied at 3 - 3.
