A SUNNY VIEW COLUMN: Fondest farewells
By Sunny "Scoop" Tunget
As my first semester winds down, I start to think of the first day of school for me. I thought that I would be alone because I am not fresh out of high school. I look back now and think how dumb that thought really was. I have tons of friends! I am so glad that I met all of you. I also have had some great teachers. I want them to know that I really did and still do appreciate the things that they have done for me. Thank you!
I now know that a friend and, also, a wonderful instructor are leaving. Manuel Garcia-Sanchez, co-editor of the Apache will be leaving this semester. In the short time that I have known Manuel, he has been a wonderful friend and a great editor. He has helped me through my journalistic nightmares. (Since I have never even tried to write for a newspaper, there were some real nightmares!!!) He is the life of the party. Manuel, I would like to say thank you for being a good friend. I will miss you and never forget you. (Your silliness and craziness will not be easy to forget!!!)
Now I go on to someone who wasnt one of my instructors this semester, but will be next. Dr. Rose Marie Lynch has made such an imprint on my life in the short time that I have known her. She will be retiring at the end of this school year. It will be absolutely impossible to forget her. Dr. Lynch is the Apache advisor and journalism instructor. She lets us be real (with some guidance)!
Dr. Lynch will be leaving us after 32 years with IVCC and the Apache. If it had not been for her guidance, the Apache would not have made it as long as it has. Dr Lynch is still going to work part time at IVCC, but she will no longer be running the paper. We will definitely miss her.
Her shoes will be hard to fill. (Just as a little note, the staff of the paper would like to have seen the new name for the paper be "The Lynch Leaves" to pay tribute to this wonderful person. Of course, she said "no!")
On a personal note, I would like to thank Dr. Lynch for being such a wonderful person and for making such a HUGE imprint in my life in just the short time that I have known you. Thank You! I will miss you.
I guess I wrote this for all of you to think about someone who is leaving or has already left that has made an impression on your life. Since now is the time of year for giving, maybe you should give that person a very fond farewell. Tell that person what they have meant to you. No, you dont have to get all mushy gushy, but at least thank them. You could take that person out for lunch, or, in the spirit of the holiday, give them a Christmas card or present. A little love goes a long way.
To all my friends that I will see next semester, have a very merry Christmas and a Jammin New Year!!
