IVCC becomes the 'Home of the Eagles'
IVCC is now officially the "Home of the Eagles."
The College Board adopted the Eagles as the college mascot at their Nov. 20 meeting following a student vote in which Eagles was chosen as the new mascot over two other suggestions, the Rockies or the Vipers, by nearly a 2 to 1 margin.
"Out of the nearly 300 votes cast, Eagles was the overwhelming favorite," said Bob Marshall, vice president of student services, at the Board meeting. "Im pleased to bring this recommendation to the board because I believe it clearly reflects the wishes of our students, staff and those community members who voted."
The search for a new mascot name began after the Board of Trustees decided to discontinue use of the Apache mascot at its September meeting. Eagles, the winning mascot suggestion, was popular largely because of its tie to the local area and the bald eagles that live on the Illinois River.
The final vote tally, with 279 ballots casts, was Eagles 157 (56 percent), Vipers 81 (29 percent) and Rockies, 41 (15 percent).
Marshall said the next step is for graphic design students, under the direction of instructor Francie Skoflanc, to develop a new logo. In addition, Marshall said any new team uniforms purchased in the future might bear the Eagles name.
