Instructor Jill Urban-Bollis, advisor, said Psi Betas mission is "professional development of psychology students through promotion and recognition of excellence in scholarship, leadership, research and community service."
Requirements for membership are an overall GPA of 3.4, completion of at least one semester of a psychology course, completion of 12 semester hours and payment of a once-in-a-lifetime membership fee of $50.
The IVCC chapter was installed in May 2000 with the induction of three members: Beth Ann Swierkosz of LaSalle, Sarah Schwarting of Peru and Bonnie Milner of Tonica.

Full-time and part-time students are eligible after completing at least 12 credit hours at IVCC with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
A press release from PTK says "to help ensure that no one is omitted from the list of eligible members, the advisors encourage any student who meets the eligibility requirements to contact one of the advisors in person or by phone, e-mail or letter by Sept. 20.
Faculty advisors are Wes Black, math instructor; Marjorie Hunt, computer technology instructor; and Kirk Lockwood, English instructor.
RIVER TESTING: Anyone interested in river testing or canoeing is invited to join the Chem Club at 8:45 a.m. Sept. 23 in the IVCC circle. Students and staff will be testing on the Little Vermillion River and taking an optional canoe trip afterwards.
Cost is $20 per person, if canoeing. A sign up sheet is on the door of the chemistry lab.
NEED HELP WITH A CLASS? Help with classes is available free of charge through the Peer Tutoring Center, located in B-315. Coordinator Mary Turchi said help was available in most subject areas. The schedule, by subject, is posted on bulletin boards throughout the campus.

STUDYING SOCIAL ISSUES: Societys lack of respect and responsibility was the topic addressed by four panelists who talked with students enrolled in English 0903, College Reading and Writing, on Aug. 31. Brian Waitkus, Illinois State Police; Janelle Beltramini, Bureau County Child Protection Services; Beth Safranek, ADV/SAS; and Patrick Carroll, North Central Behavior, discussed a variety of social problems including child and elderly abuse, domestic violence, sexual harassment and drinking and driving.
The panelists pointed out that use of date rape drugs was on the rise in the Illinois Valley area.
PUT YOUR NAME IN PRINT: The Apache is still accepting applications for the staff. Students are needed for news and sports writing, photography, graphic arts, cartooning, and page design.
All students, part-time and full-time, are eligible; no prior publishing experience is required.

BACHELORS DEGREE AT IVCC: IVCC has partnered with Lewis University to offer a bachelors degree in social and community studies at IVCC. The social and community studies degree prepares individuals to be effective in the modern work environment. Students examine gender and diversity issues, teamwork, group processes and conflict management skills.
Applicants must be at least 24 years old with three years of work experience and at least 32 semester credit hours of college. Further information is available from Mary Lou Meader, director of continuing education, at 224-0490.
GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIP: Students interested in a career in mathematics, natural sciences or engineering may apply to the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program. In April 2001, the scholarship will be awarded to students who will be college juniors or seniors during 2001-2002. The award covers eligible expenses up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.
Students must be nominated by their institution. To be eligible, a student must be a current full-time sophomore or junior, pursuing a baccalaureate degree, have a B average and stand in the upper fourth of the class. ETHICS TEAM WINS GRANT: IVCCs Global Ethics Team has been awarded a $6,500 grant to present its ethical fitness seminar for local high schools this year. The grant, sponsored by the Illinois Community College Board, will allow IVCC to host a seminar on campus for representatives from district high schools.
"Were excited about this," said Ron Groleau, a member of the team. "In this day and age, most everyone seems to be interested in ethics and values."
The other members of the team are Gloria Bouxsein, division chair of health professions; Valery Calvetti, counselor; and Cory Tomasson, speech instructor.
