LETTER TO EDITOR:  Response to 'Tennis Skirt Scandal'

Back to Apache home page

Dear editor,

Mr. Bloomquist, you never cease to disgust me. Your article in the Sept. 14 edition of the Apache, “Another Skirt Scandal,” is the typical male chauvinistic garbage that society does not need.

You interviewed Heidi Hewitt, a freshman on the squad who said she wished the team wore skirts. I bet when you interviewed Ms. Hewitt, she had no idea that you would treat her and other women like an object to be leered at by men.

You, along with other men and women, need to get it through your heads that women are here for many purposes and one of them is not for you to salivate over.

Another uneducated statement of yours, “but before you angry feminists prepare to riot and throw their burning bras…” implied that when women demand respect and equality we are “angry feminists.” I never considered myself a feminist, just a strong, vocal woman; however, as soon as I started to voice my beliefs, I was labeled.

Feminist is one of the nicer things I’ve been called for my position on equality. Why is that? Men demand respect; why can’t women?

Attendance at the women’s tennis game is low, but why would you even imply that it is because the athletes aren’t wearing skirts? Personally, I believe the male students deserve more credit than what you’ve given them.

The women’s tennis team is very talented, and I wish them luck in all that they do. I am just glad they now know why you would attend their games.

Amanda Barnhardt
