REGISTER TO VOTE: LaSalle County residents can register to vote with Giacomo Leone in E-212 through Oct. 10 to be eligible to vote in the Nov. 7 election. Two forms of identification, one with the persons address, are needed, Leone said.

RIVER TESTING - CANOEING: The IVCC Chem Club is sponsoring a river testing and canoeing trip on the Fox River Oct. 7. Interested students should meet in the circle drive at 9:15 a.m. The cost is $20 per person to rent the canoes. Advisor Bob Byrne said the group would be canoeing to two test sites.
CHEMISTS RECOGNIZED: The IVCC Chem Club has been recognized as an Outstanding Chapter by the American Chemical Society for activities conducted during the 1999-2000 school year. The local group was one of only 31 student chapters nationwide and one of two community college chapters to be classified Outstanding.
Members will be honored at the national ACS meeting in San Diego, Calif. on April 1, 2001.
The ACS has also awarded the club two grants for projects to be conducted during this academic year. The first, $375 for Wonder Science/pHUN Chemistry, is a Community Interaction Grant. The second grant, for $100, is an Innovative Activities Grant for Mole Day Celebration.
PUPPETS POPULAR: Alexander Alligator and Buckey Bronco were the stars on the IVCC dental assisting team at the Health Fair at Lincoln Elementary School in Oglesby recently.
As usual, Alexander and Buckey were a big hit with the kids, said instructor Pat Pearson describing the two puppets the students use to demonstrate brushing and flossing techniques. The children are not afiraid to show us how they brush and floss on the puppets.
Members of SODA, Student Organization of Dental Assistants, take turns attending local health and safety fairs and making presentations to daycare and preschool classes.
STOP THE HATE: Members of People of the World End Racism will be speaking to fourth grade classes at Lincoln Grade School in Ottawa on accepting differences in others on Oct. 16. POWER advisor Kim Abel said Stop the Hate Day is Oct. 5, but the POWER group has adopted Stop the Hate as their theme, so every day is Stop the Hate Day. I am so impressed and proud of the POWER members who have commited to giving up their fall break day off school to volunteer, she said.
JOINING PTK: Rho Omega, IVCCs chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honors society for two-year colleges, will hold its fall induction ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 12 in the Fireplace Lounge. Letters of invitation have been sent by College President Dr. Jean Goodnow. Industees are encouraged to invite family and friends to the ceremony, which will be followed by refreshments.

HOLA AMERICA: A new bilingual newspaper, Hola America, is available, free of charge, in the Adult Learning Center, E-323. Published weekly, the newspaper covers the Illinois Valley, the Quad Cities and Muscatine.

TORBECK RECOGNIZED: Joel Torbeck, employer relations representative at the Dislocated Workers Center, received special recognition at the Illinois Department of Employment Security Annual Veterans Conference in Peoria recently. The award recognizes Torbecks leadership and support in providing service to veterans. Torbeck works in the Ottawa Illinois Employment and Training Center and has worked closely with IDES Veterans Representatives, assisting veterans in their job search.
