Brian Glass of Geneseo and Stephanie Brown of Ladd were the top men’s and women’s finishers at the second annual 4-mile Cross Country Classic on campus Oct. 14.

Glass outran Ken Lauff of Sterling over the last 300 yards to win in a time of 22:47. Lauff finished second in 23:02, Joe Bornac of La Salle, third, in 23:28 and Tim Nagle of Oglesby, fourth, in 24:36.

"Brian went over the course in his usual carefree way, easily handling the field," said race director Dennis Summers.

Other top local finishers in the Starved Rock Runners circuit race were Steve Eller of Earlville, fifth, 25:29, Mark Klimaszewski of DePue, seventh, 25:57, Vern Johnson of Spring Valley, eighth, 26:00, John Gutz of Streator, ninth, 26:01, and Michael Miroux of Spring Valley, 12th.

Brown was the first female finisher in a time of 29:13. Julie Saorin of Ottawa was second in 30:46, Sherry Steen of Streator, third in 31:25, and Kerri Brady of La Salle, fourth in 32:09.

Men’s age group winners were Dustin Crowe of Streator (13 and under), Jake Resser of Ottawa (14-18), Klimaszewski (19-24), Bornac (30-34), Lauff (35-39), Nagle (40-44), Paul Hendrickson of Berkeley (45-49), Gary Harmon of Utica (50-54), Charlie Kerley of Earlville (55-59) and Dick Parker of Morris (60 and over).

Women’s age group winners were Alaina Sunken of Wenona (13 and under), Jacqueline Marquardt of Oglesby (14-18), Brady (25-29), Saorin (35-39), Sherry Steen of Streator (40-44), Ann Vestle of Cedar Rapids, Iowa (45-49), Lynn Lulay of Mackinaw (50-54), Joyce Simkins of Peru (55-59) and Mary Jane Pratt of Granville (60 and over).

About 100 runners and walkers--a field twice as large as the previous Year’s race--enjoyed perfect weather and a scenic course, said Summers.

"Several said they enjoyed running through the pine forest and through the auto shop," Summers added.
