TRANSFER TALK: Representatives from transfer universities will be in the main lobby to talk with prospective students on the following dates:

BAKE SALE: Student Educators will have a bake sale Nov. 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. near the cafeteria. A portion of the proceeds will go to the IVCC Early Child Education Center's playground, advisor Diane Christianson said.

SIFE WORKS WITH CHILDREN: The Students in Free Enterprise Team is working with Dimmick School's fifth grade class on a manufacturing project. With the help of SIFE members, the fifth graders have assembled dry ingredients in decorated mason jars with the jars to be sold.

"Our goal this year is to exceed last year's profits of $237.62," said Tina Easa, SIFE member.

Easa said the children used the profits to purchase classroom supplies. To keep costs at a minimum this year, SIFE team members solicited donations. The Home Hardware of Ottawa donated seven cases of wide mouth jars, Easa said.

CENDEJAS RECOGNIZED: Student Oliva Cendejas of Mark has received the 2000 President’s Recognition of Literary Excellence from the Iliad Press and the National Authors Registry. Her poem, "Star," has been published by the Iliad Press.

CHRISTMAS PLANTS: Poinsettias and Christmas cacti will be available at the Student Educator's annual holiday plant sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Dec. 5 and 6 in the main lobby.

GIVING TREE: The Student Nurse Association is again sponsoring a Giving Tree to provide Christmas gifts to residents of area nursing homes. Students and staff are encouraged to take a tag from the tree, to be set up outside of the Nursing Office in A-217 by Nov. 17.

Stephanie Lynch, SNA member chairing the tree project, said the tag will include the a nursing home resident’s number and the gift they would like. "They should buy the gift, wrap it, and put the tag which includes the resident’s number on top of the gift," Lynch said. Gifts should be turned into the nursing office by Dec. 8. SNA members will deliver the gifts.

"We ask IVCC students for their support," Lynch said.

HEADING PTK: Newly elected officers of Phi Theta Kappa, Rho Omega chapter, are: Linda Tri, president; Stephen Gibson, vice president; Jennifer Grubar, vice president; Omar Pureco, vice president; and Amy Micklos, secretary/treasurer.

In other PTK news:

- Gibson represented the local chapter at the Illinois Regional Phi Theta Kappa Convention at Elgin Community College, Nov. 3 - 5.

- PTK members and advisors played bingo with residents at the LaSalle Veterans Home on Nov. 8.

PROJECTING SUCCESS: Upcoming events sponsored by Project Success include:

Nov. 17 – campus visit to ISU, rescheduled

Dec. 6 – workshop titled "Kicking Your Holiday Stress Habits" from 4 – 6 p.m. in C-316, open to Project Success students only.

Project Success students are being asked to bring a donation for the Illinois Valley Food Pantry to the office, E-301, between Dec. 4 and 15 and receive their Christmas gift.

The Project Success staff will be away from the office Nov. 27 and 28, although someone will be available to take messages. Further information is available at 224-0594.

CHEMICAL CHRISTMAS: The IVCC Chem Club is sponsoring a party for needy children Dec. 2 in the cafeteria. Anyone who can contribute a stuffed animal for a child is encouraged to do so. Further information is available from advisor Bob Byrne at ext. 432.

TEA FOR FACULTY/STAFF: The Student Nurse Association is hosting its annual Christmas Tea from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 4 in the Fireplace Lounge. Kellee Widman, publicity chair for the tea, said the event is a thank you to IVCC faculty and staff and to the staff at the clinical sites.

FREE DENTAL SERVICES: The Dental Clinic in B-214 is providing free services to students, faculty and staff. Services include examinations, X-rays, sealants and simple fillings. Dr. Terrence Danek is working with the dental assisting students to provide those services.

The clinic is open on Friday mornings from 8 a.m. to noon. Appointments can be made by calling program director Pat Pearson at ext. 359 or 227.

 NEWSPAPERS AVAILABLE: The cafeteria is now selling five newspapers, manager Paul Liddle announced today. Publications available are: The Chicago Tribune, USA Today, The Chicago Sun-Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Investors’ Business.

 FRESHMEN NEEDED: The Apache is still accepting applications for the staff. Students are needed for news and sports writing, photography, graphic arts, cartooning, and page design.

The staff is also recruiting freshmen, interested in training for editorial positions for next year. All students, part-time and full-time, are eligible; no prior publishing experience is required.

REGISTRATION CONTINUES: Registration is being accepted on campus from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday through Jan. 16. Phone-in, fax and mail-in registrations are also being accepted through Jan. 16.

A full listing of spring semester courses is on the college Web site at www.ivcc.edu. Payment for early registration is due by Dec. 7.

STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP: The National Security Education Program is offering scholarships for study abroad. NSEP provides opportunities for study in Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean. Award amounts are a maximum of $8,000 per semester or $16,000 per year.

 COLLEGE AUCTION: IVCC will be selling used equipment at its annual public auction starting at 9 a.m. Dec. 2 in the Upper Gym. Further information is available from Pat Reed at 224-0417 or Tina Brouhle at 224-0418.

WORK IN SOUTH AMERICA? RealJourney Productions has volunteer and internship openings with a film crew in Ecuador this summer. Further information is available at www.ecuaexperience.com. Application deadline is Dec. 1, 2000.

LOOKING FOR A LAB? Computer lab LRC-D is open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jacobs Library is also open during those hours.

 NEED HELP WITH A CLASS? Help with classes is available free of charge through the Peer Tutoring Center, located in B-315. Coordinator Mary Turchi said help is available in most subject areas. The schedule, by subject, is posted on bulletin boards throughout the campus.
