CLASSES CANCELED: Classes will not meet on Oct. 11 and 12 which has been designated Mid-Semester Break.

Day classes will also not meet on Tues., Oct. 19, for faculty and staff to participate in a Leadership and Core Values Day. The college will reopen at 6 p.m. on Oct. 19 and all evening classes will be held as scheduled.

 

CHECK OUT COLLEGES: Representatives from about 70 colleges and the military branches will be on campus to talk with prospective students or recruits from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 3 for the annual College Night. Kelly Conrad, director of admissions, said the event allows high school and college students to meet with representatives from colleges and universities around the country and to learn about the technical-vocational programs at IVCC.

 

FLU CLINIC: An immunization clinic for flu and pneumonia is scheduled for Nov. 3 from noon to 3 p.m. in F-114. The cost of the flu vaccine is $8 and the pneumonia vaccine is $20. The pneumonia vaccine requires a doctor's order.

The clinic is sponsored by Illinois Valley Community Hospital, the Hygienic Institute Community Health Center and the IVCC Nursing Program.

 

FOOD DRIVE: Students in Free Enterprise is making a difference at IVCC by conducting a food drive through Oct. 23, which is Make a Difference Day.

Non-perishable food items, paper products and hygiene products are being collected for donation to the Illinois Valley Food Pantry. Donations should be placed in boxes located in the cafeteria and in front of the information desk in the lobby.

 

GRADUATING MID-SEMESTER? Anyone planning to graduate in December must file for graduation in the Records Office by Oct. 1. The graduation fee is $10 for the first diploma and $2.50 for any additional ones at the same graduation time.

 

LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE: Faculty advisors Mike Sankovich and Bob Reese and student Nichole Johnson will be attending a leadership conference in Chicago on Oct. 5 for Students in Free Enterprise. They will hear from guest speakers and participate in leadership exercises and a career fair.

 

INTERESTED IN PSYCH? Anyone with an interest in psychology is eligible to join the Psych Club, which is being organized this fall. Instructor Jill Urban-Bollis said students met for the first time on Sept. 20 and discussed upcoming events, fundraisers, membership, officer positions and meeting times.

Bollis said there is no GPA requirement for the club. Membership forms are available from Bollis in D-307 and from Rick Mangold in D-302.

 

BOOK FAIR: The Illinois Valley Student Educators will sponsor a Book Fair on Oct. 14 and 15 in the main lobby. The fair will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 14 and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 15.

"It is an excellent opportunity to think ahead for holiday gift giving, as all items are reasonably priced," said advisor Diane Christianson. She said a variety of items, besides books, will be available.

Proceeds will be donated to the Parent-Teacher Resource Center located on the East Campus.

EDUCATORS MEET: The Illinois Valley Student Educators will meet at 8 a.m. and at 2 p.m. Oct. 13 in the ECE lab. Advisor Diane Christianson said members should attend the session that is most convenient.

 

FEELING DEPRESSED? Illinois Valley Community Hospital is sponsoring a free depression screening from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on National Depression Screening Day, Oct. 7.

Appointments for the screening can be made by calling Passages Behavioral Services, the IVCH behavioral health unit, at 223-8077 or, toll-free, 1-800-344-8077. Walk-ins will also be welcome.

Nov. 15 – St. Ambrose from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Nov. 22 – NIU from noon to 2 p.m.

Nov. 30 – U of I, Springfield from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

PTK ORIENTATION: Potential Phi Theta Kappa members are being invited to a PTK Orientation at 5 p.m. Oct. 6 in C-316. Co-advisor Kirk Lockwood said the purpose is to inform potential members of the requirements and benefits of membership. The orientation is free and pizza will be served.1

All students who have completed at least 12 semester hours with a gpa of 3.5 or above are eligible. PTK is an international honors society for two-year colleges. Members are eligible to apply for transfer scholarships to over 400 colleges in the U.S. and Canada.

PTK INDUCTION: New members of Phi Theta Kappa will be inducted at a ceremony Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Fireplace Lounge. New members, current members, family, friends and the general public are invited to attend. Refreshments will be served afterward.

 

EMERGENCY? DIAL 600: For an on-campus emergency, the extension number to call is 600.

The number connects the caller to the switchboard operator who will call for off-campus help such as ambulance, fire department or police. If the line is busy, the call automatically transfers to the Safety Service cellular phone carried by the guard on duty.

Ken Sangston, director of safety services, said callers need to identify themselves and the problem, and give the extension number and location from which they are calling.

SATURDAY RESEARCH: The Jacobs Library is open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this semester in addition to the regularly scheduled Monday – Friday hours.

PUT YOUR NAME IN PRINT: Students interested in any aspect of publishing can still apply for the Apache newspaper staff. All students, part-time and full-time are eligible for the staff.

NEED HELP WITH A CLASS? Peer tutoring is available, free of charge, in the Academic Achievement Center in B-315. Anyone who would like assistance with a class needs to fill out an application available in the tutoring office, B-325. A schedule of tutoring sessions is available there.

 

QUALIFIED TO TEACH? IVCC is looking for part-time instructors in nursing, Microsoft Office Professional 97, remedial math, remedial reading, writing, and study skills. Further information is available from the Human Resources Office, C-221, ext. 426.
