WITHDRAW DEADLINE: The last day to withdraw from classes is Nov. 9. This semester a new withdrawal policy went into effect, moving the withdrawal deadline up from the 16th to the 12th week.
Anyone who withdraws by Nov. 9 will receive a "W." Under the previous policy, early withdrawals received a "W," but from the 12th through the 16th weeks, instructors had to assign a "Withdraw Pass" or "Withdraw Fail" grade.
OOPS ON BUDGETS: Three budget figures in the chart accompanying the Sept. 30, 1999 story "SGA allocates $125,000" were incorrect.
Amnesty International is receiving $1,200, not $2,140; Focus on Fitness is receiving $600, not $3,000; and Lambda Alpha Epsilon is receiving $4,000, not $4,500. The incorrect figures reported in the chart for those organizations were the amounts those groups requested. The Apache apologizes for the errors.
CHECK OUT COLLEGES: Representatives from about 70 colleges and the military branches will be on campus to talk with prospective students or recruits from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 3 for the annual College Night. Kelly Conrad, director of admissions, said the event allows high school and college students to meet with representatives from colleges and universities around the country and to learn about the technical-vocational programs at IVCC.
DIAL IVCC: The college has a new, additional phone number, 220-IVCC (4822). Fran Brolley, director of public information, said the number was added to make contacting the college easier.
"It is easy for people to remember," he said.
SOFTWARE BARGAINS: Academically priced software is available to students, faculty and staff through the bookstore. Describing the prices as "deeply discounted," bookstore manager Lauren Sandberg said that prices compare very well with those as discount office supply stores.
As one example, she said the Microsoft Office 2000 Upgrade can be purchased for $199.95.
Sandberg said special orders are available for software not in stock.
FREE DENTAL SERVICES: A dental clinic, offering free services, is available on Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon. Pat Pearson, dental assisting instructor, said the services include dental examinations, x-rays, silver fillings, tooth-colored or bonded fillings and sealants for students, faculty and staff.
"All we ask is that you be on time for your appointment and have patience with our student dental assistants," Pearson said.
The clinical dentist is Dr. Terrence Danek who has over 30 years experience as a general dentist. Appointments may be scheduled by calling Pearson at ext. 359 or by stopping at the Dental Lab in room B-214. The clinic will be open through mid-term of the spring semester.
POWER MAKES A DIFFERENCE: Members of People of the World End Racism are participating in a Shopping Spree with area children on Make a Difference Day Oct. 23.
POWER advisor Kim Abel said children recommended by a teacher, counselor or group leader will be paired with a POWER member and allowed to select new shoes, a winter coat or other necessary items. Abel said the project might continue as a mentoring or positive role model relationship.
"I want to commend POWER members who have expressed interest in this project and are willing to give up some of their time to make a difference," Abel said.
FLU CLINIC: An immunization clinic for flu and pneumonia is scheduled for Nov. 3 from noon to 3 p.m. in F-114. The cost of the flu vaccine is $8 and the pneumonia vaccine is $20. The pneumonia vaccine requires a doctor's order.
The clinic is sponsored by Illinois Valley Community Hospital, the Hygienic Institute Community Health Center and the IVCC Nursing Program.
NAME THAT CAMP: A contest to name the day camp offered by IVCC students continues through Nov. 1. The camp, run by business, early childhood and educational psychology students, is scheduled for children in the primary grades who are on vacation for a week in the spring.
Entry forms are available throughout the campus or from instructors Diane Christianson (E-212), Alice Steljes (A-327) and Jill Urban-Bollis (D307). The winner, to be announced Nov. 15, will receive a $50 gift certificate for the bookstore.

GIVING TREE: The Student Nurse Association will be setting up a Christmas Giving Tree in the lobby outside of the Nurse Office (A-217) on Nov. 15. Gift tags on the tree will identify gifts that may be purchased for nursing home residents who have no families. Students and staff are invited to take a tag, purchase the gift and return it to the Nurse Office. The SNA will deliver the gifts.
EMERGENCY? DIAL 600: For an on-campus emergency, the extension number to call is 600.
The number connects the caller to the switchboard operator who will call for off-campus help such as ambulance, fire department or police. If the line is busy, the call automatically transfers to the Safety Service cellular phone carried by the guard on duty.
Ken Sangston, director of safety services, said callers need to identify themselves and the problem, and give the extension number and location from which they are calling.
