The IVCC Chemistry Club, an affiliate of the American Chemical Society, has been named an Outstanding Chapter for activities conducted during 1998-99.

The award will be presented to Chem Club members at the ACS national meeting in San Francisco on March 26, 2000. Only 28 of the 900 ACS student chapters nationwide have been named Outstanding.

The Chem Club sponsors numerous Wonder Science and pHun Chemistry shows for area school groups and is involved in the Rivers Project, testing in the Little Vermilion. The group's shows are partially support by four area businesses: Huntsman, Air Products, PQ Corp and Carus.

Members also participate in charitable activities including a Christmas party for underprivileged children, a project which will be repeated this year.

Chem Club officers are Tiffany Kelly, president; Tony Nevicosi, vice president; Nathan Johnson, secretary; Josh Erickson, treasurer. Cheryl Lucas and Mike Bill head the Rivers Project work. Bob Byrne is the advisor.

WIN GRANTS

The local chapter also received two grants from the American Chemical society.

A $130 grant was awarded to the Rivers Project as part of ACS’s innovative activities grants. Only 12 chapters were chosen to receive those awards.

A $275 grant was awarded for the Wonder Science and pHun Chemistry program to help promote community interaction.
