TRANSFER TALK: Representatives from the following universities will be on campus to talk with prospective transfers:

Nov. 15 – St. Ambrose from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Nov. 22 – NIU from noon to 2 p.m.

Nov. 30 – U of I, Springfield from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Dec. 1 – ISU from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Dec. 1 – University of St. Francis from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Dec. 9 – Eureka from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The representatives will be in the main lobby.

REGISTER FOR SPRING: Registration for spring semester courses, which began on Nov. 1, will continue through Jan. 7. Registrations via fax and mail will be processed within 48 hours of receipt, said Kelly Conrad, Admissions Director.

Conrad urged students to register as soon as possible.

"Some popular classes fill early, so students should not delay their registration for too many days," she said.

COMMUNICATING WITH SGA: The Student Government Association recently acquired a computer for their office and e-mail accounts are being established as an additional way of contacting SGA members. SGA member Courtney Denton also said the SGA’s web page is being updated to include member’s office hours and a list of the year’s activities. The SGA office is in C-103.

The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for 7 a.m. Nov. 18 in C-103.

STUFFED ANIMAL DRIVE: The Chem Club is collecting stuffed animals for distribution at a Christmas party for underprivileged children. Boxes are set up in the lobby and in the cafeteria for the stuffed animals. Student Tiffany Kelly, who is organizing the event, said the group is also accepting monetary donations.

The party, the second annual one hosted by the chemistry group, will be on Dec. 4 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the cafeteria. The party will feature a visit from Santa, games and prizes. The Student Nurse Association is also assisting with the event.

Contributions can be directed to Kelly, Chem Club advisor Bob Byrne, or to Paula Zimmerman, representing the SNA.

GIVING TREE: The Student Nurse Association will be setting up Christmas Giving Trees on campus on Nov. 15. Gift tags on the trees will identify gifts that may be purchased for nursing home residents who have no families. Students and staff are invited to take a tag, purchase the gift and return it to the Nurse Office, A-217. The SNA will deliver the gifts.

CHRISTMAS PLANTS: Poinsettia and Christmas cacti will be for sale on Nov. 30 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. and Dec. 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the main lobby. The sale is a fund-raiser for the Illinois Valley Student Educators.

Advisor Diane Christianson said the sale is "a wonderful opportunity to…plan ahead for Holiday decorations."

CHEMISTS TRAVEL: Chem Club members will be performing their chemistry show at Olivet Nazarene University in Kankakee on Nov. 13. The Joliet section of the American Chemical Society invited the local group to participate in honor of National Chemistry Week, Nov. 6 – 13.

AND THE WINNER IS…. counselor Valery Calvetti, who named the IVCC day care camp. The camp, offered during spring break for local schools, will be known as Camp Apache. Business instructor Alice Steljes, one of the day camp supervisors, said the children will be called Junior Apaches.

Calvetti won a $50 gift certificate to the bookstore. The naming contest began in late September, and the winner was announced on Nov. 1.

LEARN ABOUT ENGLISH GROUP: Sigma Kappa Delta, the English Honor Society, is having an informational meeting at noon Nov. 22 in A-320. Advisor Kim Radek said the purpose of the meeting was to provide information to potential members. Refreshments will be served.

WOODLAND EXPO PLANS: The Illinois Valley Woodland Expo, scheduled for July 21 - 22, 2000, on the IVCC campus, will feature over 90 exhibits and seminars including: Backyard Habitat, sawmill demonstrations, basket making, diagnosing yard and tree pests, bird and butterfly identification, erosion control, installation and maintenance of ponds, and herb gardening. Also scheduled are a lumberjack show, musical entertainment, and art exhibits. Organizers of the event expect attendance to be over 8,000. The Expo is co-sponsored by the City of Oglesby and by IVCC as a part of the college’s 75th Anniversary Celebration. EUCHRE – BINGO PARTY: Project Success is hosting a Euchre Tournament / Bingo Party from 4:30 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 2 in the cafeteria. The event is open, free of charge, to Project Success students, IVCC faculty, staff , administrators and families.

Prizes will be awarded and dinner will be served. RSVPs should be sent to counselor Meg Kowalczyk or to Project Success at ext. 594 by Nov. 23.

BUYING/SELLING BOOKS: Textbooks for spring semester classes will go on sale in the bookstore and online Dec. 1.

Dec. 13 - 16 will be the dates for the fall textbook buyback at the bookstore. Buyback hours will be 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

BUILDING SELF-ESTEEM: Project Success is offering a Self-Esteem workshop free of charge from 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 17 in C-316. Anyone interested should sign-up in the Project Success office in LRC-D.

NEED HELP WITH A CLASS? Peer tutoring is available, free of charge, in the Academic Achievement Center in B-315. Anyone who would like assistance with a class needs to fill out an application available in the tutoring office, B-325. A schedule of tutoring sessions is available there.

FREE DENTAL SERVICES: A dental clinic, offering free services, is available on Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon. Pat Pearson, dental assisting instructor, said the services include dental examinations, x-rays, silver fillings, tooth-colored or bonded fillings and sealants for students, faculty and staff.

"All we ask is that you be on time for your appointment and have patience with our student dental assistants," Pearson said.

The clinical dentist is Dr. Terrence Danek who has over 30 years experience as a general dentist. Appointments may be scheduled by calling Pearson at ext. 359 or by stopping at the Dental Lab in room B-214. The clinic will be open through mid-term of the spring semester.

SHOPPING DISCOUNTS: Bergner’s in Peru is sponsoring a Holiday Community Day events Nov. 20 to benefit Project NOA. A packet of five certificates, each worth $10 off on a purchase of $50 or more, will be sold for $5. All packet proceeds will go to Project NOA.

EMERGENCY? DIAL 600: For an on-campus emergency, the extension number to call is 600.

The number connects the caller to the switchboard operator who will call for off-campus help such as ambulance, fire department or police. If the line is busy, the call automatically transfers to the Safety Service cellular phone carried by the guard on duty.

Ken Sangston, director of safety services, said callers need to identify themselves and the problem, and give the extension number and location from which they are calling.

DIAL IVCC: The college has a new, additional phone number, 220-IVCC (4822). Fran Brolley, director of public information, said the number was added to make contacting the college easier.

"It is easy for people to remember," he said.

FOUNDATION FUNDING: A total of 109 students received 120 IVCC Foundation scholarships this fall totaling over $62,000. At their Oct. 18 meeting, Foundation directors also learned that Foundation assets are $2.271 million.

RECORD-BREAKING NUMBERS: Enrollment reached an all-time high during October. At the Oct. 20 meeting of the College Board, President Dr. Jean Goodnow announced that 4,660 students were enrolled. The previous high was 4,561 in fall of 1991.

PUT YOUR NAME IN PRINT: Students interested in any aspect of publishing can still apply for the Apache newspaper staff. All students, part-time and full-time are eligible for the staff.
