Promoting volunteerism a goal of nurses
Promoting professionalism, volunteerism, and giving back to the profession and community are the goals of the Student Nurse Association, one of the largest and more active groups on campus.
Since the semester started, SNA members have helped with orientation for incoming nursing students, sponsored their annual Bloodmobile and Bone Marrow Drive, and sold clip boards which have medical/nursing information on them.
Advisor Pam Mammano added that SNA "hopefully helps make the process of being a nursing student a little bit easier."
Future activities will include the Giving Tree, a Christmas project to collect gifts for needy nursing home residents and needy children, a Christmas tea for IVCC faculty and staff, receptions for December and May associate degree nurse graduates, and a summer reception for Licensed Practical Nurse graduates.
Mammano said the group also hopes to sponsor a nationally known speaker in the spring. Last year SNA hosted an HIV-AIDS awareness evening which was attended by over 300.
SNA members also participated in legislative lobby activities in Springfield last year, and a few members attended the state SNA convention.
Officers for 1998-99 are Cindy Fulkerson, president; Brooke Simmons, vice president; Kim Wiemholt, secretary; Lynn Kaszynski, treasurer; Jerrilyn Brown, student government representative; and Kim Briddick, public relations.
