English honor society Sigma Kappa Delta is one of IVCC’s newest student organizations. Organized last year, the group recruited 48 active student members and sponsored a number of activities in the spring.

Advisor Kim Radek said about a dozen members attended a viewing of Kenneth Branagh’s "Hamlet" in April, and an end-of-semester fund-raiser generated nearly $300.

To fulfill its goals of recognizing achievement in English and providing cultural stimulation, SKD is planning to sponsor a guest speaker and two theatre bus trips this year. The group also will host a writing contest and hopes to send two students, Radek and co-advisor Brian Campbell to the national convention. A used book sale may be the organization’s major fund raiser.

"We would like to think that our existence enhances IVCC’s reputation for academic excellence and confirms the schools commitment to students’ academic performances," Radek said in the organization’s evaluation of its first-year activities.

To qualify for membership a student must have earned a 2.5 cumulative gpa in a minimum of 12 semester hours and must have completed at least one college-level course in English with a B average.

Students inducted into IVCC’s group become members of the national SKD. IVCC has one of the few chapters located in Illinois. Most of the $35 membership fee, Radek said, goes to cover national dues.
