SIFE for teamwork, leadership

Back to Apache home page

Interested in learning leadership, teamwork and communication skills and improving your job prospects while having fun?

Then you are a prime candidate for Students in Free Enterprise, according to advisor Alice Steljes.

"SIFE teams create programs to teach current economic issues and basic economic concepts to all ages," Steljes said.

The group has been inactive since 1992, but Steljes and co-advisors Mike Sankovich and Bob Reese are working to make the group active and successful again. On Sept. 22, executive officers from SIFE international will be on campus to talk with IVCC students interested in joining the team. Attendance at that reception will be by invitation only.

From 1990 to 1992 IVCC’s SIFE team won trophies in regional and national SIFE competitions "despite the handicap of competing against four year schools," Steljes said.

The national SIFE organization has now created a two-year division which will allow IVCC’s team to compete against other community college students.

"By generating computer simulations, seminars, news articles and television and radio commercials, students get the kind of experience they can’t find in the classroom," Steljes said. "Students tackle issues like illiteracy and the undereducated work force, the dangers of deficit spending, and the consequences of excessive government regulation.

"This hands-on experience helps students improve their team-building, communication and leadership skills -- an important advantage when the job hunt begins."

Activities planned for this year include a training session in October and competition in April, both in Chicago.

There is no fee to join SIFE, but students must enroll in a one credit hour course. Further information is available from the advisors.
