The Rho Omega chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, an international community college scholastic society, recognizes academic excellence, supports campus activities and contributes to community groups.

Last year, officers and advisors attended the national convention in Nashville, Tenn. and a regional leadership conference. Fund raisers allowed the group to contribute to a local project that supports PTK’s The America Reads Challenge.

Last spring, member Debbie Crask was selected for Illinois’ All-Academic Team. In fall and spring semester ceremonies, approximately 100 students were initiated into the society.

Events scheduled for this fall include a meeting at 11 a.m. Sept. 18, an orientation session at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 30 and an initiation at 7 p.m. Oct. 9, all in the Fireplace Lounge.

Officers for 1998-99 are Sara Kilgore, Victoria Borden, Joyce Moak, Naomi Read, Tammy Serafini and Chris Smith.

Membership is open by invitation to students who have earned 12 or more hours in transfer credits with a gpa of at least 3.5.

Advisor Marge Hunt said that recognizing academic achievement is a major purpose for the group, but that the "opportunity to develop and provide leadership and opportunity to participate in service activities" are also important.

Co-advisors with Hunt are Lori Nall, Wes Black and Kirk Lockwood. PTK has been active at IVCC since 1968.
