Newspaper staff open to all IVCC students
The Apache, IVCCs newspaper, is published ten times a year by a volunteer student staff. Distributed free of charge throughout the campus, the newspaper is funded through student standard fees.
Participation is open to all students, part-time and full-time. Advisor Dr. Rose Marie Lynch encourages students in all fields to apply, adding that the Apaches award-winning history is a big plus for staff members.
"No matter what you do on the staff or what career you are entering, experience on a newspaper makes a good resume entry," Lynch said, "but many of our staff members have won awards in state and national competitions, and thats really impressive."
For the past 13 years the Apache has placed either first or second in the Illinois Community College Journalism Association competition. Last year staff members won 11 state and two national awards. Those winning entries are on display in building D.
While some of the top editorial positions are currently filled, the staff is still looking for photographers, writers, graphic artists, students interested in page layout and design, and an arts and entertainment editor.
"You dont need publishing experience," Lynch said, "just interest. We can train you."
Another plus for staff, Lynch said, is access to state-of-the-art computer hardware and software as well as manual, automatic and digital cameras.
Application blanks are available outside of the Apache office, B-316.
The next issue will be published on Oct. 8. The copy deadline, for news, columns and artwork, is Sept. 30.
The Apache, which has been continuously published since 1967, traces its history back to 1933 when the first newspaper was published by students attending LaSalle-Peru-Oglesby Junior College, IVCCs predecessor.
