THANKSGIVING BREAK CHANGE: IVCC will be closed all day on Wednesday, Nov. 25, the day before Thanksgiving.
In past years, the college closed at noon on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving Day. This year the college will be closed on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Classes resume Monday, Nov. 30.

BUY COOKIES, DONATE BOOKS: Rho Omega Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa will have a bake sale in the cafeteria from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 23. Any basked goods will be accepted for sale on Sept. 22 and 23 in the office of advisor Wes Black, E-303.
PTK will have a book drive Sept. 21 and 25 in conjunction with PTK Internationals service project, "American Reads Challenge." Childrens books may be brought to the college and placed in the donation boxes that will be visible on campus.
HOT TIP: A visit to the Reading, Writing and Study Skills Lab web page can win you a chance at an IVCC t-shirt. The Red Hot Tip & Contest offers visitors to the site a chance to solve a puzzle. A correct answer enters your name into a drawing for a shirt.

NEED DENTAL WORK? The Dental Assisting Program is seeking patients in need of a dental exam, x-rays, fillings or sealants. Treatment will be offered free of charge to currently enrolled students and to college employees when the campus clinic begins on Oct. 23.
Pat Pearson, dental assisting instructor, said, "We are not looking for patients who only need their teeth cleaned; we are preparing students to be dental assistants not dental hygienists."
Anyone interested in scheduling an appointment should contact Pearson at ext. 359 or stop in the dental lab, B-214.
Free full mouth radiographs for students and staff will be taken beginning Jan. 14, 1999.
JOB HUNTING HELP: A series of career planning seminars is being offered free of charge by the Career Service Center.

WANT TO SEE BRITAIN? If youd like to see the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, and other British sites up close and personal, apply to study in Canterbury, England. Through IVCCs membership in the Illinois Consortium for International Studies and Programs, IVCC students can live and study in England for a semester, earn 12 hours of credit in classes with British students and immerse themselves in the culture of the United Kingdom.
Political science instructor Joe Mikyska, who has taught in England for the ICISP program, said typically 15 to 20 students from schools throughout Illinois take advantage of this study opportunity each semester. WELCOME TO IVCC: High school seniors will be on campus Sept. 23, touring, visiting classes and talking with faculty and students.
WINSday (Welcome Into New Surroundings) Open House, organized by Director of Admissions Kelly Conrad, is designed to help high school students with their future plans.
"Those in attendance last April found this event to be worthwhile and fun," Conrad said. "The classroom visits were a hit."
Other WINSday Open Houses are scheduled for Nov. 18, 1998, March 17, 1999, and April 7, 1999.
POCKET GUIDE AVAILABLE: A student pocket resource guide is available free of charge in E-316, the Connections Center. The guide includes IVCC programs and their phone extensions, local service agencies and their phone numbers and 800 numbers.
FAST TRACK TO GED: Students can now complete GED testing more quickly if they qualify for the new Fast Track. Offered on Saturdays, Fast Track includes four hours of instruction with two tests.
Students must have a tenth grade reading level and register in the Adult Center to qualify.
The next testing date is Sept. 26 for literature and science. Oct. 3 is the date for the Constitution and social studies.
NURSING DISCUSSION: "Nursings Past, Present and Future" is the topic of the next Honors Colloquium Program on Sept. 23. Patricia Vidmar of Provena St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet will lecture and lead a discussion from 2 p.m. to 3:50 p.m. in F-113.
The program is open to the public and free of charge.
ON DISPLAY: IVCC will be represented at the Sept. 26 Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce & Industry Business Expo and at the Oct. 15 Streator Area Chamber of Commerce & Industry Career and Occupations Day.
The Ottawa Expo runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall. The Streator event is from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Streator High School.
