TRANSFER TALK: Representatives from the following universities will be on campus to talk with prospective transfer students:

Oct. 9 – Eureka from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Oct. 12 – U of I, Springfield from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Oct. 27 – Univ. of St. Francis from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Oct. 27 – Lewis University from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Oct. 29 – Eureka from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Nov. 9 – Eureka from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Nov. 17 – Univ. of St. Francis from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Nov. 23 – Eureka from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Dec. 3 – Eureka from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

All representatives will be in the main lobby.

COLLEGE NIGHT: At least 50 college and university representatives will be on campus from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 4 to talk with prospective students at the annual College Night.

Two financial aid seminars will be offered that evening: a general Financial Aid Seminar from 6:45 to 7:45 and a Financial Planning for College Seminar from 7:30 to 8: 30, both in the Cultural Center. The first is for high school students and their parents; the second is aimed for parts of young children.

JOB HUNTING HELP: A series of career planning seminars is being offered free of charge by the Career Service Center.

* Nov. 12 – Resumes, cover letters, interviewing, follow-ups, skill assessments.

* Dec. 10 and Feb. 11 – Motivation, choosing an occupation, marketing yourself.

* March 18 – Talk with local Human Resource Managers

All seminars will be from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in D-225. Contact the Career Service Center to reserve a seat.

GET YOUR FLU SHOTS! Flu shots will be available in F-114 on Nov. 4 from 1 to 5 p.m. for $10. Bonnie Grusk, chair of the Health Professions Division, said doctor’s orders will not be needed for anyone over 18.

Pneumonia vaccine will also be available that afternoon for $20.

The Flu Clinic is co-sponsored by the LaSalle County Health Department and Community Health Services of Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru and is open to all students, staff and the public.

SUPPORT FOR ADULTS: An Adult Student Support Group is meeting from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. every other Thursday. Counselor Renee Jones, who is working with counselor Meg Kowalczyk in organizing the group, said any students over 25 years of age are invited to attend. Further information is available from Jones at ext. 366 or Kowalczyk at ext. 592.

GRADUATES HONORED: Four IVCC graduates, former participants of the Dislocated Workers Center, were honored at the Tenth Annual Awards Banquet held by the DWC, the Partnership for Workforce Development and the Business Employment Skills Team.

Those honored were Nicole Beyer, Ottawa; Glenn Pinter, Cherry; Jim Tieman, Spring Valley; and Robert Von Ruden, Streator. They were honored, according to a DWC spokesperson, for overcoming barriers and obstacles to make a difference in their lives and the lives of others.

Von Ruden was also selected as a state of Illinois award winner and he will be honored at the JTPA banquet in Springfield Oct. 29.

At the banquet, Jennifer Scheri, career counselor, was presented with a five-year service award.

PTK CEREMONY: Phi Theta Kappa will induct new members at a candlelight ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 9 in the Fireplace Lounge.

AGAPE ADVISOR? A search is underway for a faculty-staff advisor for Agape, a student organization that sponsors Bible studies and discussions. Cory Tomasson, Coordinator of Student Activities, said the organization has not been active in recent years.

Anyone interested in advising the group should contact Tomasson.

HORSING AROUND: "The World’s Oldest Horserace: The Palio of Siena" is the topic of the next Honors Colloquium Program on Oct. 21. Carole Zucco of the Dominican University will lecture and lead a discussion from 2 p.m. to 3:50 p.m. in F-113.

On Nov. 4, English instructor Brian Campbell will lecture on "Hollywood’s Retelling of a Classic Tale: The Devil’s Advocate and ‘Young Goodman Brown’" also in F-113 starting at 2 p.m.

Both programs are open to the public and free of charge.

PUT YOUR NAME IN PRINT! Positions on the student newspaper staff are still open.

Students interested in writing, editing, photography, graphic design, cartooning, any aspect of publishing, can apply for the staff. All part-time and full-time students are eligible; no experience is necessary.

VIOLENCE - ASSAULT SERVICES: ADV & SAS, a domestic violence and sexual assault service, has opened an office in C-212. A counselor is available Mondays and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesdays and Wednesdays from noon to 8 p.m. and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon.

NEWSMAKER QUIZ WINNERS: Kim Jalley won the Apache sponsored Campus Newsmaker Quiz in the student category, which earned her an IVCC t-shirt. Sandy Beard, secretary in the Student Development Office, won in the faculty-staff category, for an IVCC mug.

WELCOME TO IVCC: High school seniors will be on campus Nov. 18, touring, visiting classes and talking with faculty and students.

WINSday (Welcome Into New Surroundings) Open House, organized by Director of Admissions Kelly Conrad, is designed to help high school students with their future plans.

Other WINSday Open Houses are scheduled for March 17, 1999, and April 7, 1999.

ON DISPLAY: IVCC will be represented at the Oct. 15 Streator Area Chamber of Commerce & Industry Career and Occupations Day from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Streator High School.

HOT TIP: A visit to the Reading, Writing and Study Skills Lab web page can win you a chance at an IVCC t-shirt. The Red Hot Tip & Contest offers visitors to the site a chance to solve a puzzle. A correct answer enters your name into a drawing for a shirt.

NEED DENTAL WORK? The Dental Assisting Program is seeking patients in need of a dental exam, x-rays, fillings or sealants. Treatment will be offered free of charge to currently enrolled students and to college employees when the campus clinic begins on Oct. 23.

Pat Pearson, dental assisting instructor, said, "We are not looking for patients who only need their teeth cleaned; we are preparing students to be dental assistants not dental hygienists."

Anyone interested in scheduling an appointment should contact Pearson at ext. 359 or stop in the dental lab, B-214.

Free full mouth radiographs for students and staff will be taken beginning Jan. 14, 1999.

WANT TO SEE BRITAIN? If you’d like to see the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, and other British sites up close and personal, apply to study in Canterbury, England. Through IVCC’s membership in the Illinois Consortium for International Studies and Programs, IVCC students can live and study in England for a semester, earn 12 hours of credit in classes with British students and immerse themselves in the culture of the United Kingdom.

Political science instructor Joe Mikyska, who has taught in England for the ICISP program, said typically 15 to 20 students from schools throughout Illinois take advantage of this study opportunity each semester. Two students in the last year were from IVCC. Further information is available from Mikyska in D-304.

THANKSGIVING BREAK CHANGE: IVCC will be closed all day on Wednesday, Nov. 25, the day before Thanksgiving.

In past years, the college closed at noon on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving Day. This year the college will be closed on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Classes resume Monday, Nov. 30.

NEED HELP WITH A CLASS? Peer tutoring is available free of charge in the Academic Assistance Center in E-301. Applications are available in the tutoring office, E-312. Further information is available from Coordinator Vickey O-Neal-Woodward.

POCKET GUIDE AVAILABLE: A student pocket resource guide is available free of charge in E-316, the Connections Center. The guide includes IVCC programs and their phone extensions, local service agencies and their phone numbers and 800 numbers.
