Dave Sharp, one of the two sophomores on this years basketball team, is not a big time scorer, but he gets high marks for being an intelligent and versatile player.
"He (Sharp) thinks very intelligently when he is on the floor," said head coach Mike Riley. "Dave is also a versatile player. He can play any of the positions and his heart is not set on just one."
The 6" guard from Hall, who came to IVCC partly because he wanted to play community college ball, saw very limited action last year. Riley, who is in his first year at IVCC, has coached Sharp just this season and is planning some changes.
"We are actually going to try him (Sharp) at point guard this weekend to see what kind of looks he can give us there," Riley said. "Dave is a good competitor and is willing to do anything to play."
His competitive spirit may come from his background, his athletic family. All of his family members have played sports. His father played at IVCC and went on to ISU on an athletic scholarship.
Sharp himself got hooked on basketball when he started to play in the fifth grade, and he has competed since then. He also played baseball, but decided to drop baseball in high school and focus on basketball.
He came to IVCC "to play basketball a few years at the junior college level to get a feel for the college atmosphere," he said. He added that IVCC is also close to home and inexpensive compared to a university.
This will be his last season in basketball, Sharp said. In the fall he plans to transfer to ISU and major in education and concentrate on his plans to be a teacher.
