Network problems to be resolved
by Staci J. Sessler
Students and staff alike have been experiencing difficulties with the campus computer networks lately, such as the network being slow or even shut down.
All of these problems can be attributed to one source, according to Harold Barnes, Director of Computer Services.
The contractors hired to switch the networks over are still "finishing the wiring, installing the equipment and fine-tuning it," said Barnes.
"It is a very sophisticated network and its just not done yet," Barnes commented.
"This was supposed to be a seamless transition with no problems like the ones were having. I have called the project manager (at Clover Technologies) and expressed my displeasure with the situation," Barnes said.
According to Barnes, the wiring of the network has taken a lot longer than expected, but should be done by December 23.
Over the holiday break, the Computer Services Department will not be taking a vacation, in order to get everything up and running for the spring semester.
"We will be redoing the software on the servers, all of the computers (on campus) will be updated with new versions of three different software packages," according to Barnes.
In the near future, Barnes said they hope to have E-326, which is the Art lab, up and running. Other changes to come later in the spring include remodeling the general use lab in D-building.
Barnes said, "The floor will be raised and all of the wiring will be underneath; there will also be some new computer tables installed."
The Dislocated Workers Center lab in B-building is finished and in use. Barnes said there are just minor things left to be done there, such as mounting the projector from the ceiling, and installing the podium.
Computer Services hopes to have at least three SMART classrooms done for the spring semester; A-213, B-213, D-229, and possibly E-326.
