By Aubrey Nicole Walder

MADRIGAL: A song for small groups in which several voice parts are combined so each part is interesting and independent both melodically and rhythmically.

MADRIGAL DINNER: A 16th century holiday feast – Renaissance music and lavish dinner.

MADRIGAL DINNER AT IVCC: A 25-year tradition which transports you to a 16th century castle, the shields, banners, candelabra.

You feast on liver pate, Cornish hen, a rich plum pudding and other delicacies. To quench your courtly thirst, the singer-servers bring a glass of wassail punch.

The brass ensemble and a recorder ensemble set the mood. Acrobats, from the Dance Center and led by Vicki Benak, perform.

Dancers demonstrate three 16th century dances: the pillow dance, pavanne, and galliarde.

All of this for $22, tickets available in the Bookstore, at three performances: Dec. 11 and 12 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 13 at 2:30 p.m. in the Grand Hall, more commonly known as the Upper Gym.

Serving the meal and providing the entertainment will be nearly 50 performers in the Collegiate Chorale and Chamber Singers, as well as the Brass Ensemble and Recorder Ensemble, all dressed in 16th century costumes.

The event is under the direction of Kathy Sarver, who has directed music groups and assisted with play production at IVCC for many years. William Hall, who originated and directed the Madrigal at IVCC for 23 years, is assisting with choreography.

The meal is being catered by the Illinois Valley Banquet Center which has prepared the menu for the Madrigal for several years.
