ENGLISH MEETING: Sigma Kappa Delta, the English Honor Society, will meet at noon Dec. 11 in A-310. Kim Radek, co-advisor, said it was an organizational meeting and any members may attend.

READING RESPONSE: The Nov. 19 Family Reading Night was attended by about 300 people, and the book sale netted over $8,000.

Student Activities Coordinator Cory Tomasson said IVCC received 10 percent from the sale. A total of $500 was used to purchase books for the early childhood education program, area grade school, and the reading lab. Tomasson said the remainder will be used for next year’s Family Reading Night.

CASH FOR TEXTBOOKS: The bookstore will be buying back textbooks during final exams, Dec. 14 through 17 from 9 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.

ENCOURAGING DIVERSITY: A program entitled "Synergy From Others: Cultural Diversity on Campus" will be presented at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Feb. 3 in the Cultural Centre. Jerry Corcoran, director of human resources, said actors from SST Communications will use a combination of humor and drama to highlight the importance of cultural diversity.

Corcoran said bringing this program to campus was an outgrowth of the NCA Self-Study Report which said the college should increase its efforts to establish more diversity and a greater appreciation of diversity. The program, planned by the Diversity Task Force, is open to students, faculty and staff.

SPRING AUDITIONS: Auditions for the spring semester play "House of Blue Leaves" will be on Jan. 7 at 6 p.m. and Jan. 8 at 3 p.m. in the Cultural Centre. Dr. David Kuester, theatre director, said students interested in working backstage or helping in any areas of the production should also attend these auditions.

MIND BENDING: Mentalist Chris Carter will perform from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Feb. 2 in the Cultural Centre. His appearance is sponsored by the Student Government Association. Admission is free of charge.

PUT YOUR NAME IN PRINT! Positions on the student newspaper staff are open for the spring semester.

Students interested in writing, editing, photography, graphic design, cartooning, any aspect of publishing, can apply for the staff. All part-time and full-time students are eligible; no experience is necessary.

OPERA OPPORTUNITIES: The Chamber Singers and Collegiate Chorale will present a one-act opera, "The Devil and Daniel Webster" by Douglas Moore on May 2.

Dr. Alan Peters, director, said all voices are needed for the program which may be supplemented by operatic excerpts. Both choruses will meet at 1 p.m. on MWF in D-223 during the spring semester.

ITALIAN ART TRIP: A trip to explore the treasures of Italy is being scheduled for May 30, 1999 through June 12, 1999 by Dana Collins.

The trip includes tours of Milan, Venice, Florence and Rome, guided visits to a number of museums, a full-time tour director, breakfast and dinner daily, hotel accommodations and airfare from Chicago for $2,899 to $2,929.

JOB HUNTING HELP: A series of career planning seminars is being offered free of charge by the Career Service Center.

* Dec. 10 and Feb. 11 – Motivation, choosing an occupation, marketing yourself.

* March 18 – Talk with local Human Resource Managers

All seminars will be from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in D-225. Contact the Career Service Center to reserve a seat.

WANT TO SEE BRITAIN? If you’d like to see the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, and other British sites up close and personal, apply to study in Canterbury, England. Through IVCC’s membership in the Illinois Consortium for International Studies and Programs, IVCC students can live and study in England for a semester, earn 12 hours of credit in classes with British students and immerse themselves in the culture of the United Kingdom.

Political science instructor Joe Mikyska, who has taught in England for the ICISP program, said typically 15 to 20 students from schools throughout Illinois take advantage of this study opportunity each semester. Two students in the last year were from IVCC. Further information is available from Mikyska in D-304.

POCKET GUIDE AVAILABLE: A student pocket resource guide is available free of charge in E-316, the Connections Center. The guide includes IVCC programs and their phone extensions, local service agencies and their phone numbers and 800 numbers.
